More and more riders are buying bikes online and making it the new normal. The physical proximity seems reassuring, but the fact that you have to ‘try’ your bikes first is overrated. Purchasing a right-sized bicycle is as easy as the click of a button. But, if you are still in two minds about shopping online, here is a quick guide on finding the optimal bike frame size.

Consider the Bike Type

The most basic and important thing to do is to consider the bike type before jumping to the bike size. Before making a purchase, verify if the bike fits your needs, interests, and fitness.

1. Picking the Right Sized Mountain Bike

Mountain bikes can be tricky because you rely on it heavily when it comes to the terrain. Mountain bike frames are measured in inches, and the sizing varies from about 13-15 inches up to 23 inches and above, i.e., ranging from small sizes to taller ones. Mountain bike frames are generally smaller than road bike frames. This makes it easier for you to handle rougher terrains.

2. Choosing the Correct Size/Frame for Road Bikes

Road bikes which are more popular can be easily measured by you and your inseam. Stand with your legs 15-20 cm apart. Measure the height from your groin to the ground. Multiply the leg inseam length (in centimetres) with a factor of 0.70. In short, your frame size for the road bike will be 53 cm if your leg inseam is 76 cm. Moreover, a road bike’s handlebars should be 1 or 2 sizes lower than the top of the seat. This permits a forwarding-leaning, aerodynamic-riding position.

3. What's the Right Hybrid Bike Size?

Hybrid bikes combine features of both road and mountain bikes. Their sizes differ from using inches (like mountain bikes) to centimetres (like road bikes) to S/M/L system. The frame size is calculated by measuring the length of the seat tube from the centre of the front chain-ring to the top of the tube (where the seat post inserts).

 4. Figuring the Perfect Sized Kid's Bike

Measuring your child’s inseam is one of the best ways to find the right bike size for your kid. The correct frame size can be determined when the child is able to reach the floor easily with both feet at the lowest saddle height. This contact with the ground on both sides provides the child with the necessary safety. The suitable size for children’s bikes is usually defined by the size of the wheels in inches. Lastly, a robust frame guarantees stable handling.

Finding the Optimal Bike Frame Size

Some of the common mistakes that people make while setting their bikes is opting for the wrong size. Hence, bike-sizing is very important to ensure good posture and riding comforts. Most struggles remain regarding the positions of your body, which simply means your saddle or handlebar positions are not aligned to your individual needs. It is always advisable to consult an expert or refer to a size chart. Always remember, one size never fits all.
